Like most health care professional's the physical therapy licensure procedures and requirements are different in every state. One thing that is the same in all states is the requirement that the program attended by those apply for a license in physical therapy be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education.
The licensing process varies by state both in the requirements and the timelines as well as the fee amounts. You will need to check with each individual state to determine what the requirements are. This clearly is something that should be done prior to choosing an educational program. Most states require that you complete an application, supply them with back material as proof of your education, or proof of credentials.
Most of the schools offering programs locally will have available licensing information for your information and use. This information should be taken very seriously. Obtaining an education and being unable to practice because you were unable to obtain a license would be a waste of time, money and effort. Knowing what is expected of you as a professional in your state will help you to become the best physical therapist you can be and will prevent there being any delays in getting your new career started.
The licensing procedure in each state has various deadlines attached to the application process. You will do well to aware of those deadlines prior to completing your application. Know what your deadlines are well ahead and you will eliminate any confusion later down the line. Licensing rules are always changing therefore; make sure you review the requirements regularly. Your professors will also likely keep you up on what changes occur. Deciding what school to attend is, in itself, a challenge. You will find that knowing all of the requirements before you start your journey will both be overwhelming and give you a sense of freedom. Knowing what you need to be doing gives you a sense of confidence while you head down that path. Having your destination and knowing what hurdles you are going to have will make it easier to plan for your future. |
